How might we create a game based on the concept of roots?

Our team made a 2D puzzle game called the “Root of Evil” for the Pittsburgh Global Game Jam 2023 within a span of 2 days. The theme of the game jam was “Roots”. The team faced several challenges, including having 2 team members falling ill during the game jam. However, with effective teamwork and communication, we were able to complete our submission in time.

GETTING TO THE ROOT OF IT

After creating 40 different game ideas, we made the game Root of Evil, which can be played here

GAME TRAILER
DESIGN

For the game jam, I led the character design and contributed to the UI design of the game’s interfaces.
Below are low fidelity sketches of the character and a storyboard for the game trailer.

High fidelity prototype of the game was designed with Figma and Photoshop CC, then implemented in Unity. In the game, the player is a “bad seed”, faced with the moral dilemma of choosing between making friends or being evil. The bad seed relies on water drops for energy and can get to them faster by eliminating friends.

The Bad Seed’s path is indicated by green dashes, animated flowers guide players to the next step in the rooted soil.

There are blocks in the root network, as indicated by rocks. Red dashes indicate shortcuts that the Bad Seed can go through but it has to eliminate its seed friends in order to do so.

I designed the user interface for end-of-game screens. Due to time constraints, these were not implemented in Unity, but if there was more time these would pop up at the end of the game.
